Vermont Resident Thrilled to Spot Rare Canada Lynx

A man driving down a road in Shrewsbury, Vermont, was lucky enough to spot a Canada lynx on August 17, an animal https://vtfishandwildlife.com/learn-more/vermont-critters/mammals/eastern-bobcat rarely seen in the state, according to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department (VFWD). Gary Shattuck captured this video a short distance from his home. He told Storyful he noticed the animal's "leisurely saunter" and said its coloring and stripes caught his attention. "Very surprised. It was immediately apparent that this was either a bobcat or, could it possibly be, the threatened, rarely seen lynx?" Shattuck said, noting he quickly went home to grab his camera. He said he returned to find the animal sitting by the side of the road. He then proceeded to capture footage of it for several minutes. He told Storyful the day after his encounter, he sent all of his photos to VFWD, who were later able to https://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/news/2024/08/23/canada-lynx-seen-rutland-county-vermont-endangered-large-cat/74903474007/ confirm the species. "It was exciting, indeed a privilege, to have this very unique experience," Shattuck said. According to the VFWD, Canada lynx are nearly extinct in Vermont, and are on the state's endangered species list. Brehan Furfey, wildlife biologist and furbearer project leader with Vermont Fish and Wildlife, told Burlington Free Press that Canada lynx are also threatened nationally. "That makes any verifiable lynx sighting in our state important. This newest sighting is especially exciting because the cat was spotted in Rutland County, far south of most confirmed lynx reports in Vermont."
