Lebanon's major sports facility to serve as shelter for displaced civilians

BEIRUT, LEBANON - NOV. 13, 2024: A major sports facility in Lebanon will be converted into a temporary shelter for displaced civilians, providing refuge amid ongoing crises that have left many without homes. The Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium, the largest sports facility in the Lebanese capital Beirut, will be a home for families displaced by Israeli airstrikes. Construction and renovation work is underway, with Beirut Municipality collaborating with several Lebanese civil society organizations. Israel has escalated its air campaign in Lebanon since late September against what it claims are Hezbollah targets, in an escalation from year-long cross-border warfare since the start of offensive on the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7, 2023. Nearly 3,300 people have been killed, over 14,200 injured and more than 1 million people displaced by the Israeli attacks since last October, according to Lebanese health authorities. Israel on Oct. 1 launched a ground incursion into southern Lebanon. (Footage by Houssam Shbaro /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
