Shogun's Funeral Procession Revived In Nikko
TOCHIGI, JAPAN – MAY 17: A long procession comprising of traditionally armored samurai warriors, cavaliers and Shinto priests was revived to commemorate the 400th anniversary of death of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, who founded Tokugawa shogunate government in 1603. The procession was actually carried out in 1617, the next year of Ieyasu's death, when his body was carried from Mt. Kuno in Shizuoka, where it was temporary placed, to Nikko, his eternal resting place. The Nikko Toshogu Shrine, which enshrines Ieyasu, is designated as UNESCO's World Heritage along with related historic sites concerning Ieyasu. The Tokugawa shogunate ruled by Ieyasu's descendants lasted more than 250 years until late 19th century.
