London Mayoral Elections: Charles Kennedy interview; ITN ENGLAND: London: INT Charles Kennedy MP (Liberal Democrat Leader) interviewed SOT - All indications are as this campaign has gone on, particularly as it has got through to this final decisive phase, you're seeing exactly what you saw in Brent, & indeed going back to Bermondsey 20 years ago, when Simon was first elected, that when people begin to see it could be two horse race & that our candidate offers prospect of change, against status quo, that opens whole thing out - that's why support for us is growing rapidly as we reach finishing line - Polls do show us having gone up / One of problems has been that there hasn't been degree of advanced interest I would have expected in this contest, national interest - mayor of London is not just big national political force, but international political force - Predominant factor in many ways has been Iraq, understandably so - I accept this, it would be a strange country we lived in if it was not - so much of national political dialogue over last year, particularly during run up to London elections, was dominated by all terrible controversies, images we know about coming out of Iraq - It is correct to make Iraq an issue of European election campaign (interrupted: but Simon Hughes has been doing it in London) indeed & so has Ken Livingstone, & Steve Norris - both find themselves at variance over Iraq with their own party leaders & official party position, Simon & I are at one as are Liberal Democrats over matter / But irrespective of candidates & their leaders, public will make Iraq a big issue - I don't accept that it hasn't taken off - I think this has been a more slow burning campaign than we would have anticipated / I've been out with Simon, response is as you would expect, as you hear anecdotally in London - he has a high positive profile, people know he speaks his mind & sticks up for his constituents - Number of things (wrong with Livingstone) - we've ...
