PEACE IN VIETNAM

PEACE IN VIETNAM; ENGLAND, London: Houses of Parliament: EXT BV Crowd going in: policeman directing: MS JULIAN HAVILAND: SOF: Westminster this evening is the scene of a number of acts of protest about the Vietnam war. Apart from the mass lobbying of MP's now going on, there's been the presentation of a petition in the Commons, There's yet another teach-in going on at Central Hall followed by a mass rally. And this evening in the Lords, there's to be a debate initiated by Lord Brockway, the Labour life peer, and veteran pacifist, and a moving spirit behind the body that's responsible for all this, "The British Council for Peace in Vietnam". Lord Brockway says that the Council isn't concerned to blame anyone for the war, and among people I've talked to there's many shades of opinion represented from the avowedly anti-American, there's a number of Communists in evidence, to people who'd be reluctant to embarrass the government and others who don't take sides at all, but are simply concerned. CU CONT: But the petition which Mr. Philip Noel Baker presented today, does take a position. It asks for the government not to back either one side or the other in the Vietnam conflict, and so it challenges the British government's firm public support on the United States, it carries one hundred thousand signatures.
