3, 2, 1... Nothing! Christmas Tree Lighting Fail Disappoints Crowd at Dublin University

Literary lights are a bit of a specialty at Trinity College Dublin, the alma mater of Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, and Sally Rooney. But Christmas tree lights? Not so much. Video recorded by Coco Wisdom shows the crowd joining in for the traditional countdown on December 2, after enjoying minced pies and mulled wine in the college's Front Square. "There was a huge crowd, and carol singers were waiting for the lights to start singing. There was going to be a five-second countdown, everybody was holding their phone and waiting for the magic to happen," said Jasmine Perry, a Storyful journalist who was at the event. After the countdown, however, Perry said, "nothing happened, everybody looked around in confusion." Dr Linda Doyle, the provost of the university, immediately started a second countdown. But, as Wisdom's video shows, the result was the same. "We were anxiously awaiting for an update on when the tree would be lit. After a couple songs, they said they would try to light the tree in another 15 minutes. But then, they announced that there was an electrical issue," Perry said. Wisdom told Storyful that she was hoping for a Christmas miracle after the failed countdowns, but the crowd was told that the lighting would have to be postponed.
