Liam Fox speech; Fox speech SOT - On relations with industry / Have enjoyed good working with British defence industry / But the industry is responsible to shareholders - I am responsible to taxpayers / I inherited National Defence Industrial Council, co-chaired by Govt and industry / It decided who govt would interface with / It is for the govt to do that, so I abolished it / Are setting up more representative body for govt to deal with / Consultation paper on getting more SMEs involved / Further reforms, will be outlined in weeks to ahead / Has it worked ? / Tested in LIbya /- We said in our SDSR we would be able to carry out a long a enduring mission like Afghanistan and 1 shorter programme (6 months duration) / We have been extraordinarily successful in Libya / Got our assets moving very quickly / Able to use land bases we had identified and lack of over flight restrictions fo Typhoon and Tornadoes and recently Apache / We set the pace in Libya and driving the military process / Also been able to use very high end munitions / Precision weapons have far less collateral damage / We are completely committed to minimising civilian casualties in Libya / Gives us the high moral ground that we have greater respect for human life than Gaddafi / Harrier and Typhoon or Tornado / We have shown by choice we made, we have full range of munitions that Harrier would have been unable to provide / On Arab Spring / Much debate about what factors triggered it / The genie of change is out of the bottle / Message we must give is that those who do not allow change to be a process may find it becomes an event / Those who continue to repress should look to Tunis and Cairo / People in that region are going to demand justice, share in prosperity, dignity and self-determination / That is the natural desire for people to see for themselves
