Labour Party leadership contest: Ed Miliband launches bid during Fabian Society speech; Ed Miliband speech SOT - There are big lessons about this campaign / we need to think in new ways about markets / globalistation is not some untameable force to which you have to adapt or die, that's not the case / we need rules for the banking system and the question is what kind of rules do you have for globalisation / for working people in this country we have never recaptured what we had in the 1960s and 70s, which was collective economic security, based on wages, pensions and secure work / we can't go back to those days, but we do need to think about what is the new settlement that gives people that security? / we need to think new ways about the state as well, lack of power in society is as big an injury as lack of income or wealth / the big society is no answer, because the big society is a recipe for abandonment, that's not what we're about, but we are about a more plural, more open and accountable state in which people feel they have power, we should devolve much more power to local authorities and communities / we need to show there is more to life than economics, of course it's about environment and climate change but it's about much more than that, it's about family, about work, community, quality of life, time, love and compassion as well, we need to make those things part of our politics / we need to think about the way we do politics itself, that needs to change as well / we have a coalition government in this country, but in my view it is absolutely essential we do know retreat from the politics of pluralism and political reform / people are fed up with the old ways of doing politics and we need to understand that and need to understand why we lost trust / we lost trust catastrophically over Iraq and we should acknowledge that / we lost trust over issues like expenses / we need a different way of doing politics / central to that is how our party looks and the ...
