Kumamon Gets Rebranded In China With New Local Name
BEIJING--Kumamoto Prefecture’s popular bear-like mascot made a fresh debut in China on March 19 when its new Chinese name was revealed at a news conference here.
The kanji characters for the new name, Xiong Ben Xiong, stand for Kumamoto bear.
Kumamoto Prefecture selected it as people in China have been calling the mascot by the nickname.
The prefecture said Chinese authorities have accepted its application for the name's trademark registration.
The prefecture had used a different name, Ku MA Meng, which is closer to the pronunciation of Kumamon, but it didn’t gain popular recognition among the Chinese public and a third party had already trademarked it.
