Kumamon Reappears In Tokyo To Say Thanks For Kumamoto Earthquake Support

Kumamon, the popular bear mascot that promotes Kumamoto Prefecture, shook hands and hugged fans at a shop specializing in Kumamoto products in Tokyo’s Ginza district on May 17, 2016, Japan, in the character’s first reappearance in the metropolis since the series of large earthquakes that hit the southern prefecture in April. The popular mascot came out of a period of voluntary restraint in a show of gratitude to supporters of the prefecture who have crowded into the shop. The shop saw its average number of customers treble to about 3,000 a day after the disaster, and has also gathered over 50 million yen ($460,000) in donations.
