Tuna Sells For 14 Million Yen In Final New Year's Auction At Tsukiji Market

A 200-kilogram Pacific bluefin tuna fetched a price of 14 million yen ($117,000) at the final New Year’s auction held in Tokyo’s popular Tsukiji fish market , January 5 , 2016 in Tokyo, Japan. “It got a bit pricey because we had some competition,” said Kiyoshi Kimura, president of Kiyomura Corp., who placed the winning bid. “I have never seen the place so packed. That’s probably because this was the last New Year’s auction in Tsukiji. I think everyone was deeply moved.” The market will be relocated to Toyosu just a few kilometers south of Tsukiji in autumn. The new market is scheduled to open on Nov. 7.
