Kenyan workers extract sand from Lake Victoria despite its dangers
KISUMU, KENYA - JUNE 23: Kenyan people living in the Nyamwarewillage of the Kisumu province have been earning their livings by extracting sand from Lake Victoria.
Their profession has been causing them to have various diseases as they have to stay in dirty waters to get sand out of the lake.
Despite all the hazard it brings, they continue to go in Lake Victoria with shovels to extract sand and carry it to their boats for trading.
They have been selling the sand they collect to contractors that will be used in construction.
Known as Africa’s pride, the largest tropical lake with a surface area of 59,947 square kilometers (23,146 square miles) was named after Queen Victoria by the British explorer John Hanning Speke in 1850. (Footage by Gerald Anderson /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
