MUGLA, TÜRKİYE - JUNE 25: Kayakoy, also known as the "ghost town" due to being abandoned years ago, is attracting visitors' attention in the Fethiye district of Mugla, Türkiye. The historical structures in Kayakoy offer visitors a journey back in time, making it a popular stop for those participating in tours around the region. The abandoned town hosted 101,868 visitors last year, making it the second most visited archaeological site in Mugla. Kayakoy, which dates back to around 3000 BC and was established on the slopes of a hill, was abandoned following the population exchange agreement in 1923 after the Turkish War of Independence. The town was a thriving community of some 10,000 until the early 1920s. Both Anatolian Muslims and Greek Orthodox Christians had lived here in harmony since its origins in the 14th Century. Although Turks started living there, the village was affected by the 1957 Fethiye earthquake, leading to the end of settled life in the area due to damaged houses.
