John Prescott MP (Former Deputy Prime Minister) interview SOT
- Petition is to express the anger of the public / The Royal Bank of Scotland is 20 billion in the red, we give it 20 billion and the Royal Bank of Scotland says 'Oh we're going to use a billion of that to pay bonuses / people don't accept that / It's a bust bank paying out bonuses for failure so I decided to whip up public opinion about it / There you are there's the taxi man saying people have had enough - I'm only expressing what the taxi man says / [speaking to unseen taxi driver] You're right, ok there, vote Labour next time! / So basically the petition was a chance, I used my Blackberry and there's so many people signing it now, I've tried for the sixth time and I can't get on it / The bank, I hope, will recognise this afternoon, this culture's over / Don't pay the bonus and that's what I'm trying to do / They wouldn't have had a contract if the taxpayer hadn't put the money in! In fact they'd have been out of a job / The taxpayer saved them / Of course I'm concerned about the poor old person on the counter, it's nothing like the 14 million they get at the top is it? / It's all part of a culture, you get paid whether you fail or not and when you're a bank and a businessman going at the moment and you go and say to the bank 'I've got a real bit of problems on the credit, can you extend the credit?' No they can't extend the credit / If they go bust do they do anything about helping the company? Perhaps paying them a bonus? No, sorry you've had it / Can't have one law for us and one law for them
