John Hutton interview:

John Hutton interview:; Part 2 of 2 ENGLAND: London: CS REGGIE SOF: (Q: What sort of tools do you use, I'm fascinated by your Heath Robinson equipment here?) MS JOHN HUTTON WITH EQUIPMENT SOF: Well, it's a piece of equipment I've had made up by an engineer, this part I had made, the rest I've added on, an ordinary flexible drive and I've invented various thing that go with it, and generally play around with it until it does more or less what I want it to do, but it's, I admit, a rather Heath Robinson affair. (Q: There's a bit here that looks like a vacuum cleaner?) Yes, in fact it is, just an ordinary vacuum cleaner which I use to hold up against the wheel and to catch the dust that flies of it. CS HUTTON SOF: Oh yes, I think it's the only way I can do it, for instance in the case of Anthony and Cleopatra, I've tried to represent the moment in the play, I forget that what Act and Scene it is, when he says to her, 'Wither hast thou led me Egypt' when he doesn't even recognise her and he is in such a state of utter despair of having fled before the enemy, that's the thing I'm trying to get hold of in the play, the destruction of the man. CS Hand on Anthony's shoulder pan to his face: (Q: What about some of the other figures?) In the case of Titania and Bottom, I've tried to choose the moment at which Titania approaches Bottom saying how wonderful he is, and how marvellous he is, and he can't really believe it, he knows he is what he is, and at the same time he's quite prepared to take advantage of the situation and have a bit of fun; and in the case of Falstaff, the only thing I can do is to show him in a roguish sort of manner with a glass of ale in his hand and holding forth with a pompous sort of feeling about thing: CS Titania tilt down: CS Bottom: CMS Tilt up Falstaff: CU Face: (Q: I believe at one stage during the war you were concerned with camoufla...
