Music: Jeff Beck dies aged 78: Steve Hackett interview; Part 3 of 3 ENGLAND: London: INT Steve Hackett (Guitarist / former Genesis band member) interview SOT Q: IS THERE A FAVOURITE SOUND YOU ADOPTED FROM HIM - Is there a favourite sound; you've got distortion, sustain, the use of pinched harmonies / you've got to think to yourself 'what hasn't he done' before you move forwards / sonically, pretty much he'd done it all with the guitar / it's all a bit too wonderful, I can't put a cap on this, I can't say what it is he did specifically, he did so many things with the guitar, so many different sound / you'd hear something and think 'what has he done this time to make the sound different' / so much of it was with the fingers, not just equipment driven Q: DID HE ENJOY HAVING PEOPLE TRY TO WORK OUT HOW HE WAS DOING IT - I don't know / I suspect he was quite secretive about it, it may well be that there are Jeff Beck instruction videos out there, I haven't seen any / it just seems like there's a few words rattled off to a journalist from time to time / there's the orientation towards eastern scales from the 1960s; suddenly world music starts to beckon at that point / his legacy is huge.
