RUSHES: Music: Jeff Beck dies aged 78: Steve Hackett interview

Music: Jeff Beck dies aged 78: Steve Hackett interview; Part 2 of 3 ENGLAND: London: INT Steve Hackett (Guitarist / former Genesis band member) interview SOT Q: SO BECK REALLY SHAPED THE SOUND OF MULTIPLE GENERATIONS OF GUITAR PLAYERS - Yes he has / all the sonic developments that happened within the guitar, you could say Jeff Beck was there first of all / there are so many techniques he had; put on a Jeff Beck record right up until the present day and you 'yeah he's done something else with it there' / he did get to work with George Martin and that was hugely influential / the other thing that doesn't get mentioned is he was great melodically; he would do things that were memorable guitar melodies / he could burn it up like crazy but he had a very good melodic sense / he played violin as a young child and I suspect there was always something of the violinist in his tone / he had great control over the guitar, limitless power it seemed / in a way he's reinvented the instrument for us Q: WHAT DO YOU THINK DROVE HIS CONSTANT NEED FOR INNOVATION - He realised he needed to work with keyboard players; there'll always be the sparring partner somewhere, the trained guy, and the guy who was all instinct / he was a magician, it's very hard for me to talk about this logically without being very emotional about it / his influence is huge, wide reaching, there are millions of guitarists out there right now who know exactly where his star is in the firmament; it will always be up there, his work will always be immortal / he lives on through the fingers, through the ears, through the amps, it's an incredibly sad day.
