- Met him a few times; very nice, charming / devastating news to know he's no longer with us
Q: WHAT KIND OF INSPIRATION WAS HE TO YOU
- Hugely / he was the first guy I saw playing a Les Paul; just extraordinary / you can't overemphasise the importance to guitarists / I've worked with Brian May and Steve Howe, each time you talk to another guitarist of distinction, they would say Jeff Beck was 'the one' / guitars sounded a certain way at that time; Jeff Beck pioneered distortion, sustain, feedback, echo, reverb / before there were synthesizers, there was Jeff Beck making his guitar do lots of different sounds / he was doing it with tone control on guitar to make it talk; the sustain he had on tracks made the guitar sound like a woman's voice / I spent a lot of time in his company before I even knew him as a 16 year old; would listen to album in anticipation of guitar solos / I was a devotee along with a legion of other guitarists.
