Sato Reflects on "Dream" Indy 500 Win
TOKYO, Japan, - June 13: Takuma Sato on Tuesday said he lived the dream by getting a landmark win for Japanese motor racing at the Indianapolis 500 last month.
"Nothing could replace that experience," Sato told a press conference in Tokyo. "It was the moment I realized the dream of what I have been striving for."
Sato became the first Japanese driver to win around the famous "brickyard" in Indianapolis. He was making his eighth Indy 500 appearance, having made the jump from Formula One to the North America-based IndyCar series in 2010.
Sato edged the race's three-time champion Helio Castroneves for the victory after starting fourth on the grid.
"I wanted to say thank you over the team radio but the words wouldn't come out." said the 40-year-old veteran who said he was briefly lost for words when he won the race.
Driving for the Honda engine-supplied Andretti Autosport team, Sato is in third position in the driver's championship title chase after nine rounds of the 17-leg series. He has 312 points, 14 behind New Zealand's Scott Dixon and one behind second-placed Frenchman Simon Pagenaud. "I have created a new dream now and that is to win the title," said Sato.
