Japan Hears From North Korea About Probe Into Remains, Wives Of Japanese
PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA - OCT. 29: Japan on Wednesday began the second of two days of talks with North Korea about a probe into missing Japanese, with the focus to shift to issues such as the remains of Japanese who died around the end of World War II in what is now North Korea. Kim Hyon Chol, department director of North Korea's Ministry of Land and Environment Protection who is handling a subcommittee in charge of the remains of Japanese nationals, said at the outset of their meeting, part of which was open to the press, that a "full investigation was conducted" regarding the graves of the Japanese people, the buried remains and burial sites. Japan will also be briefed on the remaining Japanese and Japanese wives by Ri Ho Rim, secretary general of the Central Committee of the North's Red Cross Society. When the two sides sum up the talks Wednesday afternoon, Japan will request the attendance of So Tae Ha, vice minister of state security who leads North Korea's special investigation committee, and raise the abduction issue again. On Tuesday, Junichi Ihara, Japan's top diplomat for Asian affairs who is leading the 12-member mission, demanded that the North Korean committee speed up its investigation into the fates of Japanese nationals it abducted decades ago and report the findings "as soon as possible."
