Italy’s Mount Etna continues to put on new spectacle, spewing lava into sky

SICILY, ITALY - FEBRUARY 21: Italy’s Mount Etna on Sunday night (Feb. 21) continued to spew lava and ash into the sky. Europe’s most active volcano on Sicily Island started to erupt on Tuesday (Feb. 16) for the second time this month, belching out a large plume of smoke and long lava flow from the southeast crater of its summit towering above Catania. Anadolu Agency Video News (AAVN) videoed spectacular displays of gushing lava and red lava flowing down on the mountain. The fireworks show is part of a new 'Strombolian' eruption. The rain of ash and lava affected the international airport of Catania, which stopped operations on Tuesday but resumed full activity starting at 9 am on Wednesday (Feb. 17). Airport officials stated that the runway cleaning operations continued throughout the night with the use of six sweepers and two vehicles for technical support, as well as ten units that have worked tirelessly to remove a large amount of volcanic ash from the runway, taxiway, aprons, and all the perimeter roads. Meanwhile, the residents and municipal workers cleaned streets, courtyards, and cars, bagging the ash. Driving motorbikes and scooters was forbidden, and the speed limit for cars was reduced to limit the further spread of ash. The last volcanic activity at Etna volcano was recorded in January. Italy has three active volcanos that erupted in the last hundred years. Mount Etna on Sicily and Stromboli continue to be active. Mount Vesuvius near Naples lastly erupted in 1944.
