PAN, TILT up, Daylight. Side view of the Monument to St. Francis of Assisi, by Giuseppe Tonnini. The sculpture group was made in 1925 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the saint's death. It features the saint's statue, made of peperino stone, raising his arms to symbolically embrace St. John. He is surrounded by bronze figures of his disciples. The statue was intentionally placed between the Basilica of St. John Lateran and the Basilica of the Holy Cross is Jerusalem (Santa Croce in Gerusalemme).
