Japanese Prime Minister's Adviser Iijima Visits North Korea, Likely To Convey Will To Resolve Abduction Issue
PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA - MAY 14: Isao Iijima, an adviser to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and a key aide to former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, flew into Pyongyang on May 14 in the first confirmed visit to North Korea by an official of the Abe government. Iijima was welcomed at Pyongyang airport by Kim Chol Ho, vice director of the North Korean Foreign Ministry's Asian Affairs Department. Iijima will stay in the country for several days during which he may contact senior officials of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea and the North Korean government. He intends to convey to them the Abe government's eagerness to resolve the stalled issue of abductions of Japanese nationals by North Korean agents.
