Azerbaijan embassy staff in Tehran evacuated after deadly attack

TEHRAN, IRAN - JANUARY 29: Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani and Azerbaijani Ambassador to Iran Ali Alizada attend a funeral ceremony for the victims of an attack on the Azerbaijan's Embassy in Tehran on January 29, 2023. Personnel of the Azerbaijan Embassy in Tehran, as well as their families, have been evacuated from the Iranian capital following the deadly embassy attack on Friday. An armed assailant stormed the Azerbaijan Embassy in Tehran on Friday morning with an automatic weapon, officials said. Orkhan Asgarov, head of the embassy's security services, was killed, while two security guards at the entrance were injured. Tehran's police chief Hossein Rahimi told reporters that the assailant was immediately arrested, adding that a preliminary investigation pointed to "personal and family-related problems" as a motive. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi extended condolences Saturday to his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev. Aliyev said if the terrorist had not been disarmed, he would have targeted other employees of the embassy and their family members living in the apartment section of the embassy building. He also emphasized the importance of ensuring the security of diplomatic missions, according to the statement. Azerbaijan summoned Iran’s ambassador in Baku following the armed attack on the Azerbaijan Embassy in Tehran, which killed the security chief of the diplomatic post and wounded two others. The Foreign Ministry in a statement condemned the “armed terror attack” against Azerbaijan’s Embassy in the Iranian capital. The ministry told Ambassador Abbas Mousavi that such attacks against diplomatic missions are “unacceptable” and based on the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the embassy building should be protected from any kind of attack and the security of its personnel should be ensured.
