Idlib residents organize horse-racing to say civil war badly affects horse-breeding
IDLIB, SYRIA - AUGUST 29: In Idlib province of Syria, which is home to many displaced civilians due to ongoing regime attacks, residents have organized a horse-racing activity in order to point at the difficulties in the business of horse-breeding.
Around 50 racers from various places in northern Syria attended the race held in Sermede district of Idlib.
Residents of the district, who earn their living from horse-breeding, have told that their means of living as well as many other things have been badly affected by the war in the country.
They have difficulties in feeding the horses and curing them in cases of diseases.
Nevertheless, they wanted to show that horse-breeding continues in the war-torn province.
Syria has been ravaged by civil war since early 2011 when the Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protesters.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced, according to UN estimates.
Idlib falls within a de-escalation zone forged under an agreement between Turkey and Russia.
The area has been the subject of multiple cease-fire understandings, which have frequently been violated by the Assad regime and its allies.
The influx of displaced civilians has increased its population to about four million in recent years. (Footage by Muhammed Abdullah/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
