Walkway To Kamakura’s Ancient Shrine Reopened To Public Just In Time For Cherry Blossoms
In a grand ceremony involving Shinto priests and Kabuki stars on March 30, 2016 in Kamakura, Japan ,the stone-paved promenade leading to Kamakura’s famed Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine was reopened to the public just before the 177 “sakura” cherry trees along its sides reach their full bloom. The 465-meter Dankazura promenade is believed to have been laid out in 1182 by Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147-1199), founder of the Kamakura Shogunate, and has been a designated national historic site since 1967. In November 2014, it was closed off for a renovation of its loosened stones and replacement of its aged trees, in a project which cost 714 million yen ($6.3 million).
