Illinois Senator Dick Durbin says in his first floor speech since announcing his retirement from Congress in 2026 that Pope Francis used his platform to highlight the plight of immigrants and refugees, ask compassion for those in the LGBTQ community whom the church had historically shunned, advocate for peace in distant wars, and protect the environment, and as a child of immigrants himself, Pope Francis often reminded us of our responsibility to welcome the stranger, recently affirming America's right to defend itself while raising serious concerns about mass deportation which damages the dignity of many women and entire families, a timely message as the government ignored due process and deported people through administrative errors.
