Congresswoman Miller introduces SCREEN Act to counter children from online pornography as earlier exposure has psychological effects
Illinois Congresswoman Mary Miller says on the House floor that children were first exposed to pornography at an average age of 11 years old despite blocking and filtering software being ineffective with nearly 80 percent of children and teens between 12 and 17 exposed to content that descended into violence and degradation, which caused psychological effects including anxiety, addiction, low self-esteem, body image disorders, increased problematic sexual activity, and desire to engage in risky behaviors, prompting 16 states to declare youth exposure a serious public health issue, 19 states to enact age verification requirements, and the Supreme Court to consider the Texas age verification law, making it clear the SCREEN Act was needed to protect children from pornography.
