Displaced Syrians at Idlib camps living at risk of infectious 'oriental sore'
IDLIB, SYRIA - JULY 07: Hundreds of Syrians staying at camps under inhuman conditions are now at risk of an infectious disease, known as oriental sore.
The humanitarian situation across Syria remains alarming as it enters the 10th year of civil war.
An escalation of regime attacks force people to take shelter at relatively safer camps, where thousands of displaced people try to survive.
The lack of infrastructure services and medical pharmaceuticals at the camps has exacerbated the outbreak of the disease, also known as cutaneous leishmaniasis, a severe infectious skin disease that can cause serious disability.
Over 400 families are living at the camp in Idlib province, northwestern Syria, and already 120 of them have been infected with the disease, said a camp official, Adnan Kaddur.
"The lack of medicine, and ponds of sewage leads to the disease, and the number of infected people is increasing every day," he said.
Among the infected people is Mohamad Al-Ibrahim, who said seven members of his family are fighting against the disease.
Having fled the regime attacks, he took shelter at the camp with his family.
"The camp's condition is pathetic. There is dirty water and bad smell all around the camp. Seven people in my family are infected with the disease, and there are no drugs. We also searched for alternative medicine but it was no use. The disease is getting widespread, we are so worried. The health centers are away from this camp," he said.
The country has been mired in a vicious civil war since early 2011, when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed since and more than 10 million displaced, according to UN figures. (Footage by Muhammed Abdullah/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
