Pro-Palestinian protesters take to NYC streets to mark 77th anniversary of Nakba

NEW YORK CITY, US - MAY 15: Hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched through the streets of New York City on Thursday, May 15, to commemorate the anniversary of the Nakba, or “Catastrophe” referring to the mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the establishment of the State of Israel. In 1948, more than 700,000 Palestinians were displaced from their towns and villages. "Resisting the Nakba since 1948," read some banners during the protest, which saw a scuffle between pro-Palestine and pro-Israel demonstrators. The Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, killing more than 53,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. (Footage by Lokman Vural Elibol/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
