House Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Workforce Protections Chairman Ryan Mackenzie of Pennsylvania says opening a hearing on the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act that boxing had long been a symbol of grit determination and the will to overcome impossible odds qualities that were at the heart of the American spirit, declared boxing was failing to meet the high standards of American sports and what was once a respected and unified sport became fragmented plagued by inconsistent standards weak enforcement and a troubling lack of accountability, and that too often fighters were pushed into dangerous matches without proper medical oversight resulting in a system that too frequently exploited the athletes instead of protecting them.
