Medical staff shortage hinders patients' access to treatment in Paris

PARIS, FRANCE - APRIL 29: A hospital in the capital Paris city of France announced that due to a medical staff shortage, only patients transported by the UAS or firefighters will be admitted to the emergency room of the hospital, on Saturday (April 29). CHI Robert Ballanger Adult Emergency Service said in a statement that Due to a shortage of medical staff, only patients transported by the UAS or firefighters will be admitted to the emergency room of the hospital center; from Friday, April 21, 6 p.m. until Monday, April 24, 8 a.m., then every night from Monday, April 24 to May 2 from 6pm to 8am. The management of the establishment thanks all the partners in the territory who are mobilizing to allow the continuity of care. Patient care is ensured thanks to the support of all, the statement added. The French health system is going through a crisis due to insufficient wages, and the lack of personnel, beds, and infrastructure amid a "tripledemic" of coronavirus, flu, and bronchiolitis. The crisis became more tangible with waiting periods of up to 10 hours in emergency units, patients laying in the corridors, and some of them dying before receiving treatment. The government announced a budget of 19 billion to strengthen the healthcare system. President Emmanuel Macron expressed his wish to increase the number of medical assistants currently around 4,000 to 10,000 by the end of 2024, adding that 6 million French people do not have access to an attending physician.
