JR Hokkaidos Yubari Line Reaches End Of 127-Year Journey
YUBARI, Hokkaido--A railway line that operated during the dramatic rise and stunning fall of a coal-mining city closed for good on March 31 after 127 years in service.
Railway buffs and residents waved yellow handkerchiefs and penlights to bid farewell when the final train sounded a whistle and departed Yubari Station at 7:34 p.m. on Hokkaido Railway Co.s Yubari branch line.
Yubari is the main location in the 1977 film The Yellow Handkerchief, directed by Yoji Yamada and starring Ken Takakura.
