Turkey's Rising Inflation Hits Hazelnut Farmers Amid Harvest
ORDU, TURKEY - AUGUST 27: Hazelnut farmer Emina spreads hazelnuts out for drying after harvesting on August 27, 2022 in Ordu, Turkey. Turkey is the world's biggest exporter of hazelnuts, accounting for more than 70% of the world's hazelnuts with most coming from the countries Black Sea region. However, Turkey's rising inflation is taking a toll on the region's hazelnut farmers and could soon see supplies shrink. Turkish inflation rose to a 24-year high of 79.6% in July, 2022 effecting exports, prices for seeds, fertilizer and other supplies cutting into farmers' profits and raising the prices of hazelnut products.
