Carla Denyer (Green Party Co-leader of England and Wales) interview SOT
Q: On the speech today, a huge focus on house building, uh, raising the numbers of affordable homes across the country. How are, how are you gonna do that?
A: So there is no single silver bullet to tackling the housing crisis, and that's why the policies that we announced today at our launch, um, are a collection of policies that together help tackle this acute housing crisis we're in. Part of it is about providing adequate funding to local councils to provide the level of affordable housing they need. That's through a mixture of new build renovation, uh, and buying, buying back into, into the public sector. Um, that means the a a community right to buy, if you like. So we would scrap Thatcher's right to buy, which is basically was the conservative way of selling off council housing by stealth. And instead we would give councils housing associations and community housing groups first right of refusal on certain policy on certain houses as they come, uh, onto the market. And that would help increase council housing numbers. Um, we'd also help unblock, um, problems in the planning system that get, get more houses built, um, and uh, and we'd also give councils the power to, uh, tame the private rented sector. So in a lot of places in the country like Bristol, the private rented sector is really outta control and rents bear no relation to incomes anymore. And it means that a generation of people are simply unable to save for a deposit and are gonna be stuck in the private rented sector forever if we don't make these interventions. So we would give councils the power to do that. Um, and we would also end no fault evictions so that nobody has to face the threat of being made homeless almost overnight.
