- So they asked me would you do this, and I said yes / it sounds good and then you have to do it / everyone was telling me why I shouldn't do it; Nancy Soderberg who's on the previous panel here, she was on my National Security Staff, and she and Tony Lake and Sandy Berger favoured naming a Special Envoy / everyone else thought I was crazy / the British press was so mad that they were speculating that I just did it to burn John Major because he checked my passport files for the Bush campaign in 92 / like I would change all American policy; today there are people spiteful enough to do that, but I was too dumb to think like that / everybody's going nuts and saying 'Clinton is so pissed off at Major for checking his passport files to see if he tried to give up his citizenship to join the Soviet Union' / I mean go figure / that's the only reason he's doing this; that's how inconceivable it was to the British body politic / I respected that Major tried because he was on a very thin parliamentary majority, he needed the unionist members of parliament, and he risked it anyway / he tried, and I think we should all give him credit for trying /
