Science funding: George Osborne attends Francis Crick Institute; George Osborne (Chancellor of the Exchequer) speech SOT - Great pleasure to be here / - Want to pay tribute to everyone who has made this possible / - Want to thank Paul for the extraordinary vision / - One of my first decisions was to give this project the go ahead / - Simple decision to make sure we went ahead with this / - Delighted and honoured to be here / - This event comes at a time when we have been celebrating anniversaries / - In February 1953 Francis Crick and James Watson went to the pub and announced they discovered the secret of life / - Sixty years on it has proved more profound than was recognized at the time / - Tackling great challenges involves harnessing the resources / - The tremendous scale of this institute is exactly the kind of environment we need to promote great science / - Paul will ensure a continuous process of renewal / - We are financing it alongside the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK / - The Crick will promote talent that will spread across the UK / - Paul has never settled for the safe option / - I am sure that will be the spirit of this great institute / - I spoke about making Britain the best place to do science / - I spoke about the space sector / - Now we have Tim Peake going to the ISS / - What interested Paul in science was astronomy / - Must seize this to get the next generation interested in science / - Much more has been happening / - Six hundred million more / - The PM has committed us to identifying the genomes / - We absolutely understand our responsibility / - A better quality of life than ever before / - Our generations has that obligation to invest in future generations / - Has clear economic benefits too / - Coming together to create economic dynamism / - I will set out how we deliver / - I can tell you about five new projects / - We talk about the problem of crowding out / - Smart public spending can also crowd in / - I can tell you there wi...
