RUSHES: General Election 2024: Braintree declaration - James Cleverly win

General Election 2024: Braintree declaration - James Cleverly win; ENGLAND: Essex: Braintree: INT James Cleverly MP (Conservative) victory speech SOT - Thanks people of Braintree, people manning polling station, security and members of press / thanks campaign team and other candidates / thanks family - This has been a very difficult night for my party, losing the position of government is painful, but it is the nature of our democracy that it happens / when it happens it is incumbent upon the party leaving government to listen carefully to what the voters are telling us / I'm not going to rush to any quick judgements, the right thing to do is be thoughtful and take a short period of time to assess what the voters are telling us - It's clear when you see the voter share that many voters are disillusioned with all of us, and we should take that on board / I think it's also right that we recognise there is nothing honourable in presenting simple and thin solutions to challenging and complex problems / the world is a difficult and dangerous place and we have to respond to that - Thanks Braintree constituency as candidates (L-R: Paul Richard Thorogood (Green), Matthew Wright (Labour), Cleverly, Kieron Anthony Franks (Liberal Democrats), Richard Thomson (Reform UK), and David Christopher Norman Heather (Independent)) along from platform.
