The hospital's founding was catalyzed by the death of Clarke Swanson in 1961. While golfing with former President Eisenhower at Thunderbird Country Club, Swanson suffered a fatal cerebral hemorrhage. At the time, the nearest hospital was over 11 miles away in Palm Springs, and Swanson died before he could receive treatment.
