OUAGADOUGOU, BURKINA FASO - OCTOBER 4: Former president of Niger and head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Mahamadou Issoufou met with Burkina Faso's new military leader Ibrahim Traore on Tuesday, Oct 4, in the country's capital Ouagadougou. The ECOWAS delegation which arrived in the country early Sunday included the bloc’s mediator for Burkina Faso Issoufou and President of the ECOWAS Commission Omar Alieu Touray. Like Mali and Guinea, ECOWAS suspended Burkina Faso from its governing bodies after the military overthrew President Kabore. They are expected to meet with members of the government, deputies, religious leaders, and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to the country. The Burkinafao's military staged a coup Friday, Sept. 30, against their former leader Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, who had been in charge of the transition since a January coup. They appointed Capt. Ibrahim Traore as their new leader, blaming his predecessor for his rapprochement with foreign forces against his country and for failing to pursue the objectives of the transition.
