Olympic swimmer McLaughlin recalls inspiration as youth and the work needed to participate in Olympics at Senate hearing on Chinese doping
Former Olympic Swimmer Katie McLaughlin says in opening testimony at a Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Technology, and Data Privacy hearing about lacking international response to Chinese doping in Olympic swimming that like many swimmers she grew up watching Olympics on TV, remembering at age 11 in 2008 watching Natalie Coughlin, Michael Phelps and Team USA relays dominate and feeling overwhelming pride to be American, wanting to do anything to be in their shoes one day regardless of time, work or sacrifice required, with being elite athlete or Olympian taking tremendous hard work and sacrifice including going to pool 10 times weekly for 11.5 months yearly hoping to be hundredths of second better than prior year, spending that much time training looking for edge or something to set themselves apart, with being clean athlete representing only way and option to achieve dreams.
