GAZA, PALESTINE - FEBRUARY 1, 2024: For months, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, under Israeli attack, have been facing major difficulties in obtaining clean water. On Thursday (Jan.1), a Gazan woman waiting in line for water said, “This water is not clean enough to drink. This water is very bad. I can only access drinkable clean water by placing a plastic container when it rains and collecting the water.” The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has announced that “access to clean water in the Gaza Strip has become a matter of life and death.” It was noted that thousands of people share a small number of shower stalls and toilets, leading to the spread of skin diseases such as scabies and lice due to the inability to shower. UNRWA's spokesperson, Tamara al-Rifai, also stated that according to their latest findings, in Gaza, "there is one shower stall for every 2,000 people and one toilet for every 500 people." More than 30,000 displaced Palestinians lack food, water and medicine in the southern city of Khan Younis, Gaza’s Health Ministry warned on Thursday. Israel has mounted a deadly offensive on the Gaza Strip following a Hamas attack on Oct. 7, killing at least 27,019 Palestinians and injuring 66,139, while nearly 1,200 Israelis are believed to have been killed in the Hamas attack. The Israeli offensive has left 85% of Gaza’s population internally displaced amid acute shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.
