'Fawlty Towers' cast reunite for unveiling of documentaries; ENGLAND: London: INT John Cleese (Actor of 'Basil Fawlty', Fawlty Towers) interview SOT Q: IT THERE A BIT OF A CURSE TO FOLLOWING SOMETHING SO SUCCESSFUL - Yeah there's a real downside to doing something very, very successful; you set the bar so high, people's expectations become so high you can't reach them / you do something that's still quite good but they say 'it's fine, but it's not as good' / that's why we never did anymore, I said to Connie when we did the second series 'do you realise, this is going to have to be better than the first series to be perceived as being as good' / because when people look back on something they tend to remember the high points / I always say as a result my experience is how sorry I feel for Orson Welles who'd made this magnificent classic 'Citizen Kane' when he was 25 / and the rest of his life everyone said 'oh it's really good what you've just done Orson but it's not as good as Citizen Kane' and of course that's terrible depressing Q: DO PEOPLE STILL SHOUT 'BASIL' AT YOU IN THE STREET - A little bit, if they've not been well brought up yes Q: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SITCOM WRITERS NOW - I have one bit of advice; go and watch a few sitcoms you really admire, the trick is, go on watching them after you've stopped laughing / it's when you are no longer laughing at them that you begin to see how it's put together and how it's done / in drama it's the same; you learn nothing while you are emotionally involved / you have to watch it until you're kind of bored with it, and that's the moment when you begin to see how it's done Q: ON WORK BEING REJECTED - You really don't know whether people are going to like things, and sometimes they like things that don't deserve to be liked and sometimes they don't like things that do deserve to be liked / I'm thinking of a film that a friend of mine made recently, was very successful, got great reviews and did noth...
