NY Gov. Hochul Calls For Expedited Work Authorization For Asylum Seekers

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 22: During a Q-and-A, NYC Mayor Eric Adams is asked, “The former school on Staten Island has remained open as an emergency shelter while others around the city have closed. Why has that been the case and how long do you intend for that to remain open?” as NY Governor Hochul, joined by Mayor Eric Adams, calls for expedited work authorization for asylum seekers on May 22, 2023 in New York City. Gov. Hochul, Mayor Adams, and business leaders pleaded with the federal government and President Joe Biden to accelerate the work permit process for the more than 70,000 asylum seekers who have arrived in New York City. Gov. Hochul spoke of the 5,000 plus vacant farm jobs, 5,000 plus food service jobs, and "4,000 openings for janitors, cleaners, and housekeepers." Business leaders in attendance said they are willing to train asylum seekers for their respective jobs. The plea to the federal government comes after the suspension of the pandemic-era border restrictions under Title 42 on May 11, 2023, as New York has seen an increase in migrant arrivals.
