“Doyo-no-Ushi-no-Hi”-The dog days of summer
“Doyo” means 18 days before the first day of each season. “Ushi-no-Hi”, the day of the ox, which is named after “Ushi-Doshi”(the year of the ox), one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. People in Japan have an old custom to eat eel with “Kabayaki”(similar cooking technique to Teriyaki) on that day. The custom seems to had started to gain energy to survive during the hot days in summer, which has been passed down from the Edo period.
