Profumo Affair: Denning Report published

Profumo Affair: Denning Report published; 3) ENGLAND: London: Ministry of Science: CS: Lord Hailsham (Quintin Hogg) (Lord President of the Council) interview SOF: - Well, the first and the most obvious thing to say is that after discussions we may have in Parliament it really gives us an opportunity to get back to the rational discussion of our public affairs, and away from the ???? of sensation and rumour which has been doing us so much damage at home and abroad. - (But how do you regard Lord Denning's criticism that Minister failed to deal with the situation concern Mr Profumo and his immoralities?) Well, at first I think you've got to deal with the more important aspects of the report. As a public man, what concerns me much more that this is the fact that he said emphatically - and I quote - There has been no lowering of standards. In other words, public life continues to be an honourable profession and any person in it today can continue to hold his head as high as any of his predecessors. That's what I'm primarily concerned with. - (But do you think Lord Denning's criticism is justified?) Well, no I don't on the whole but of course this is precisely what he rightly says Parliament must discuss. I think he was less familiar with the workings of Public life than with some of the other things which he analysed. The really valuable part, to my mind, of his analysis of the Profumo Affair was that no new facts emerged. He disposed finally of the idea that there was a security breach, and he exploded what was always a wild assertion that Profumo had anything to do with spiriting the girl away from giving evidence.
