CMS Alan Freeman (Fluff) (Radio DJ) 2-WAY interview from Radio 1 Studio, London SOT (1 of 4)
- Well actually Sonia I still think the charts are very important and I still think they are very exciting, but of course they are not as exciting as they were back in the sixties when the whole Liverpool scene started to happen. In fact young musicians in this country like Tommy Steele, Martha Wilde etcetera, were all sort of wanting to do their own things. Back in that particular period as you probably know, you had to have sales of something like 150,000 to even get into the top 20 (charts). There was one stage when the Beetles actually had pre-orders for their next single for a million copies, that hadn't actually been made yet - they didn't even know what the song was about. But in those days the single sales were very exciting, I mean they were part of our heritage, part of our culture, we couldn't wait for Tuesday to come for the next Top 30 to be published to see who was going up and who was coming down, and who had lost and who had made number 1, it was very exciting'
