Dawn Butler MP (Labour: Brent Central) on racist coments against Diane Abbott MP (5/5)

Dawn Butler MP, Labour: Brent Central interview; ENGLAND: London: Westminster: Houses of Parliament (central Lobby): INT Q: We know that Diane Abbott has suffered just appalling levels of abuse more than anybody else, uh, who's an MP. She said herself that she feels frightened and and vulnerable because of this. I mean, what sort of impact does it have on, on, on people to, to to, to go through this? SOT A: Dawn Butler MP (Labour: Brent Central) interview SOT - It's a daily struggle, you know, as a, as a black person, as an African Caribbean person, when you have to justify your presence in a space, when you, everything you do is questioned when you are attacked more, uh, for unnecessarily so, it is a daily struggle. It is a daily grind and, you know, we are supposed to be protected and often black women are not protected. Often black women are not offered that Um, you know, that condolence, that softness, you know, that is often the case. We've seen that with Meghan Markle when she entered the Royal family. You know, we see it all the time. And the thing is, we've had enough like, it, it's exhausting and we've had enough and we're not gonna keep quiet about it. You know, there's plenty of times like my mum's generation where they just accepted it because they need to just get on. And I say that for them, it was a matter of resilience and they, and they built that up. But, you know, now's the time to resist this.
