He described legalising assisted dying as a “huge opportunity for the country”. Maureen Smith dressed in her best clothes and put on her favourite jewellery before taking an overdose in her home earlier this year having lived with trigeminal neuralgia which sees sufferers endure an electric shock-like pain in their bodies in sudden attacks which her family said would sometimes see her fall to the floor. Her son, George Smith, said the 80-year-old had been denied the opportunity to have a peaceful death surrounded by loved ones, due to the law as it stands.
