Sinn Fein Rebels Campaign In East Clare By-Election
EAST CLARE, IRELAND: A crowd follows a marching band along an East Clare street during the by-election of May 1917. In their campaign for independence, Irish Republicans Eamon de Valera (later President of the Dail Eireann), and Constance Markievicz address the crowd, two of whom are waving Sinn Fein tricolours. Irish politician and nationalist Countess Markievicz fought alongside Republican men during the 1916 Easter Rising. This news item features in a War Office Official Topical Budget silent newsreel, issued at the time of de Valera and Markievicz's arrests on 17 May 1918. (Footage by IWM via Getty Images)
